Former Southwest Airlines CEO to Headline WIC 2007

Former Southwest Airlines CEO Howard Putnam will give the keynote presentation at WIC 2007.

WMIA and its partners have secured a top quality speaker line-up for the 2007 Woodworking Industry Conference. Howard Putnam, former CEO of highly-successful Southwest Airlines, will headline the opening general session by discussing "Successful Strategies Through Turbulence."  DETAILS

WIC Registration Materials to Arrive after January 1

Registration materials for the 16th Annual Woodworking Industry Conference will be mailed after the first of the year. In the mean time, you can mark your calendars for April 25-28 for the best business, educational and networking opportunities the woodworking industry has to offer. Preliminary details are available on WMIA's web site.

WMIA Scholarship Materials on the Way

You will soon receive posters and brochures to promote the WMIA Education Foundation Scholarship Program. WMIA asks you to distribute these to your customers who might want to display the posters in their plants.  If you would like additional brochures or posters, contact Carol Hannan at (410) 628-1970. This is an opportunity to show your customers the active role your company takes to improve the industry.

The application deadline is March 1, 2007.

WMIA Education Foundation invites you to be a part of our efforts in promoting the fields of wood science and wood technology. By taking an active role through education, we are improving the quality of potential personnel while demonstrating that the woodworking industry recognizes the importance of education.

2007 Membership Dues Invoiced

By now, you should have received an invoice for your 2007 WMIA membership dues. This invoice is due on receipt. WMIA is keeping to a tight schedule in order to produce a membership directory early next year. If you have questions about your dues invoice, contact Carol Hannan at 410-628-1970.

Avoiding Investment Myopia

For most of the last decade, WMIA members have taken a strong cash-flow orientation to their operations. The rallying cry has been “Profit is fine, but cash is king.” There is now strong evidence that the king is in exile. DETAILS

Storm Brewing: California's Pending Formaldehyde Regulation Looms Large for Composite Wood Products Industry

On January 1, 2011, the hardwood plywood and composite panel industries could look decidedly different than they do today. That date marks the deadline for all particleboard and veneer-core hardwood plywood panels for use in products destined for the state of California to meet strict formaldehyde emission standards as set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in its proposed regulation order: Airborne Toxic Control Measure to Reduce Formaldehyde Emissions from Composite Wood Products.
