Chairman of the Board’s Message: August 2017

Send ‘Em to Camp!!Dave2

If you want your staff to better understand the how your customers’ woodshops operate and their manufacturing processes, one of the best things you can do is send your sales and customer service people, and technicians to camp—boot camp, that is!

The WMIA-sponsored Wood Technology Industry Institute (WTII) Boot Camp, held at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS, is an overview of how a real shop runs, and it’s one of the most valuable benefits that the Association offers its members. Doug Hague and Charlie Phillips and their team do a terrific job with the Boot Camp, making it both tremendously informative and fun at the same time.

I’ve sent two of my staff to Boot Camp, and I can honestly say that it’s one of the best investments you can make, particularly for new sales, technicians, and executive staff. WTII has been operating the Boot Camp since January 2015, and the program gets stronger with every session.

Boot Camp is a unique project-based program that provides an exposure-level curriculum and hands-on approach to several of the industry’s fundamental wood processing applications, and the machinery used in those manufacturing processes. Topics covered include: AutoCAD, CAM Software, CNC, Wood Science, Primary Processing, Finishing, Veneering, Cabinetry, Machine Woods, Tool Technology, Millwork, and Facilities Management.   It’s an opportunity for your staff to see beyond what you sell and learn a little bit about all the aspects of a typical American woodshop.  And it’s all in a low-pressure environment where they can ask questions since they aren’t actually at a customer’s shop.

The next session will be held January 8-12, 2018 at Pittsburg State University. WMIA members receive a $450 discount; the $1950 tuition includes hotel, meals, course, and project materials. The only additional cost to you is the flight.

Be on the lookout: WMIA’s Education Committee is beginning work with WTII on a more advanced Boot Camp program geared at service technicians. We hope to have that launched in 2018.
